IPOD Volume issues

I really hate Itunes as its just too heavy and intrusive so now I use Winamp to upload and convert tracks to the IPOD.  While making this really great 80s playlist I noticed the volume output from my wife's 8gb Nano was really low. At first I thought it was an issue with using Winamp but with a little investigation on the web I discovered European Nanos have a volume cap.

Under Settings - Volume limit you can modify the highest volume the player will go to.  Unfortunately when I went to change this value I found it has a combination lock with a code that I had not set and did not know. I tried a couple of  things, one was to delete the file x:\ipod_control\Device\ LIMIT. Then I reset the device pressing and holding Menu and the OK button. This seemed to remove the code and I was able to increase the volume limit to something more sensible.

For new IPOD devices there is a utility called gopod that will remove the volume cap
