Choosing an ISP in Rome
As I get asked this question about once a month here are some thoughts on the subject and some potential options:
- Alice (Telecom Italia)
- Tiscali
- Libero (Infostrada)
- Tele2
- Tin.it (Virgilio)
Alice - Don't use them, unless you really, really have to. Once you get it working its fine, although I have noticed mine has slowed down a lot since I first connected. However to get connected is a nightmare and has been for everyone I know who has...or is still trying to get the service. Also its extremely hard to get hold of technical support and ever harder to actually get them to do something about your problem. They also lie and cheap, losing your requests for technical support and charging you for services that they have yet to provide...SO BE WARNED. Unfortunately if you don't have a telephone already Telecomm Italia is probably the best option, but you are locked into a minimum one year contract before you can change and their connection fee is high, along with monthly rental and thats before the Internet charges.
Tiscali - I have only heard good things about this ISP and this would be my suggested provider.
Libero - I have a friend who uses Libero and loves their service, its fast and was the cheapest for the faster connections, although this changes all the time. Also, they used to have telephone support but this has been replced with an automated system.
I don't know much about the other two. Back
